Napolean Dynamite
Lots of still camera shots where the camera does'nt move but there is lots of movement inside the frame.The overall feel of the sequence is comic stupiditiy. For the audience this is funny because it plays upon typical stereotypes in a lighthearted and amusing way.
(Mise en scene);
The setting is the sterotypical American high school so that the audience instantly recognises it, and the prejudices that accompny it.
The lead character is dressed in an amusing way that comes across as very strange and a bit simple, this alongside the facial expressions portrayed by the lead character which are often vacant and amusing again gives the impression of stupidity.
The lighting and colours used in the opening sequence are bright, commplimenting a light and positive feel to the film that helps to make it recognisable as a comedy.
Target Audience: 14 - 20yrs
The sound used in the opening sequence is non diagetic and parallel sound. For example, in the scene where Napolean is riding his bicycle to school in the morning sun, the music takes an easy going and happy tone.
The opening titles used in Napolean Dynamite are unlike those of many other films in the way that they are actually filmed props rather than edited in words. The titles appear in several different forms including; stationary and food. (see picture below).
28 Days Later
The opening titles of this thrilling apocalypse blockbuster are shown as though they are on cctv or on a news channel. The effect this has on the audience is that it makes what is going on in the scene(s) seem very real.
Also used in the opening sequence is the element of animal testing in a cruel way, this could be used to stir certain emotions in the audience, emotions that are then flipped on their head when a chilling twist is revealed...
(Mise en scene);
The setting used in the opening sequence is very dark, dank and chlostrophobic, these factors help to immediatly set the atmosphere of the scene.
The costumes worn by the characters in the scene identify them straight away as soldiers and scientists, the presence of soldiers adds the element of danger to the scene as why would they be there if all was well? The addition of the scientists brings the idea of mystery to the scene becsuse scientists and soldiers are rarely seen together in the same movie. This builds suspense in the audience as they watch the scene unravel.
The way that the characters in the scene seem very distressed and on edge helps to agitate the audience because it shows that something is wrong.
Target Audience: 18+
In the first 30 seconds or so of the opening sequence the sound is diagetic. It is loud and disturbing as you can hear the sound of people dying, screaming and fighting. This is horrific and chilling for the audience and immediatly identifies the film as a horror.
Editing is suited to the movie as it is very fast paced and uses alot of cuts.
Harry Brown
The opening sequence of this violent british movie is filmed using the hand-held technique, giving a first person perspective and thus giving us a brief insight into the characters personalities.
The main element in this opening sequence is the shocking and even disturbing level of violence seen in the first 30 seconds. This extreme violence horrifies the audience and creates a deep sense of fear for the characters displaying the violence. This efficiently lays out what the audiences attitude towards said characters will be for the rest of the film.
(Mise en scene);
The setting used for the opening sequence is easily recognisable as an urban area, it is designed to look familiar to most viewers so that the element of fear is mixed with realism.
The characters are dressed in the way that the modern youth are regularly portrayed in the media, (hoodies, balaclavas, tracksuit bottoms etc).
The sound is diagetic as we can hear the loud motorbike engine the youths are driving and the chilling sound of the gun fired...
